Camera Critters #222

I was checking the flowers around the house recently and noticed a very, very tiny bug buried deep inside one of the roses.  So I did what any good critter photographer would do…I grabbed my camera, my close-up filter and headed back to the roses.

I wasn’t sure I would get a good photo of the tiny, little critter, but I did find one I really like.

I think the creature is a House Fly…well, a very tiny House Fly.

Camera Critter #187

Being in a desert style climate, the major color I see here during my photo safaris is brown.  Weeds dry out quickly under the intense sun we get here.

But I also see other colors.  Yellow is very common.  And so is the color these eight critters are checking out.

Camera Critter #74

I am always on the lookout for a new critter to shoot, and normally I just shoot them and hope for the best. Then when I get home, upload the images to my computer and start working on them, I decide if I like the shot or not.

This particular shot, was one I lifted the camera, fired off an image and on the second frame, the bug was gone. In other words, I only got one shot of it. But when I looked at the shot, I really liked it.

All I know about this ugly, little critter is it is a member of the Tachinidae family and probably a species of Peleteria. But he sure is a cool looking fly. Besides, I love the way I cropped the shot. 8v)

Camera Critter #65

When I go out on a photo safari, I am always looking for something strange and unusual to photograph.

Ten days ago, I was out in one of my favorite areas, east of the airport in town, in the bad lands. I was checking on critters flying around and kept seeing a small bright, almost reflective object going from plant to plant. Every time I turned to the object, it was gone again.

Finally, it landed a yellow flower near me (not sure of the flower type) and I got a good look at it and several photos.

It was a Bee Fly, of the Lepidanthrax family.

Only about a quarter of inch long, this little guy looked like he was wrapped in tin foil.

Camera Critters #50

Friday was the first day of Spring.

And with Spring comes warm weather and Summer's favorite...flies.

Everyone is familiar with the common House Fly and the Green Bottle Fly. Or maybe you see one of their cousins, which are also known as House Flies. There are many of them.

But there are a lot of other species of flies. In the past I have introduced readers to some of those other species, including one of my favorites, the Robber Fly. However, today I want present some of the other members of the family known as flies.

As you can see, there are many types of flies. The Bee Fly species is one of the largest and my current favorite fly family. However, the colorfulness of the Thick Headed Fly runs a close second.

Once these small critters of the high desert area of central Oregon start flying again, I'll be out trying to capture a portrait of more of them.

I hope you enjoyed my post this week. If you would like to see more Camera Critters, just drop by the website here run by Misty Dawn and then join in the fun with an entry of your own.
