Camera Critter #87

A few weeks back, I mentioned that the arrival of Dark-eyed Juncos in my yard was good indication that winter had arrived. It's true, but there is also a number of other species of birds which are a sure fire sign of winter.

Two of the species are American Robins (no...they don't go south...they go west to Oregon!) and Canada Geese.

We have both species here during the other seasons of the year, but the number count during winter increases for both species tremendous. For the robins, flocks of thousands can be found in the Juniper woods of the area, and water holes throughout the region have their own groups of geese.

The photos below were taken several miles north of my place. I was looking for a Snow Goose reported in the area, but didn't find it. I did find lots of Canada Geese though.

Nice shot of the Geese, some people are lucky to find some different kinds of geese mixed in with the large flocks.

We still have geese here in Canada. These must be the ones from further north because they are not in a hurry to travel south. LOL

We get both here in Michigan all winter. If I were a migratory species, this is not where I'd head as the days got shorter - and colder.

Greetings from Minnesota! I too love the arrival of the juncos. Usually a lot of Canada geese remain until all our lakes freeze.
Great post.

We have such problems with Canadian geese here that won't go home!

I love geese. I love their flight, their honking, their greedy ways - I'd be sad if I thought I'd never see wild geese again.

I personally know that you were disappointed to not see a Snow Goose, but it wasn't a complete loss! Canada Geese are still great subjects!
